A Mind of Reason

Please take the time to read the posting at www.diggindirt.blogspot.com
Ann has done something wonderful. I agree 100%, and thank her for capturing the real sentiment of a community that cares. Too bad the administration doesn't.

  • GREAT ARTICLE!

  • Excellent article. It should be called, " Voice of The People."

Thank you, for writing the article.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:15 PM, July 25, 2005

  • you little people just dont get it, , why continue to fund a department that is in the red and getting worse, look to the future you little minds and see what is possible.

We, the progressives know what's in the best interests of the city, sorry about the garbage workers but thats the breaks and a sacrifice that is necessary, so if you dont like what the Mayor has done, MOVE !

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:52 PM, July 25, 2005

  • How can someone move into this area from another state, start their own business, be a political puppet and tell us how we need to run our hometown? Progressive you don't like it, you leave.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:50 AM, July 26, 2005

  • As Shirley Baird put it:

"You don't get it! The city has been borrowing from the sewer dept. for years, and now all of a sudden it can't be done."

So, you little people have no problem continuing to borrow money that could instead be used to fix your streets that you complain about so much?

It seems the little people (who oddly enough continue to describe themselves as little people, maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't continue to describe myself with derogatory remarks) want to whine about the use of EDIT money, which is actually being used for Economic Development, but when the mayor attempts to free up funds to do what you want, you scream and cry that you don’t want it to be done.

So, to all self proclaimed little people, what’s your solution? All I hear are personal attacks, no solutions. Maybe if all of the personal attacks from little people would stop, maybe they would actually grow up and no longer be little.

  • QUESTIONS

    1. WHY DOESN'T THE MAYOR AND HIS STAFF
    GET BUSY AND COLLECT DELINQUENT
SEWER AND GARBAGE BILLS. PUT LEINS
ON THE PROPERTY OF DELINQUENTS AND
    COLLECT THE PAST DUE BILLS.

    2. WHY HASN'T THE MAYOR AND HIS STAFF
PREPARED A YEARLY BUDGET AND THEN,
REQUIRE THE SANITATION TO FOLLOW? I HEARD THAT THERE IS NO
    SANITATION BUDGET IN PLACE.

    3. GOOD BUSINESS SENSE WOULD BE TO
COLLECT THE DELINQUENTS AND FOLLOW A
    BUDGET.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:20 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Response to anonymous---

I can not believe that the Mayor is running the Sanitation Dept without a
    budget for them to follow.

Is he running the whole town that way?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:23 PM, July 26, 2005

  • I read on another blog site that the
Mayor might re-consider privatizing Sanitation if the people clamor for an
    increase in their Garbage bills.

WOW--- Are we being played for fools?

Was this whole thing a gimmick by the Mayor?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:39 PM, July 26, 2005

  • NEWS FLASH! THE BOARD OF WORKS HAS JUST AGREED TO NOMINATE COUNCILMAN-
POLICEMAN MESSER FOR THE NEW POSITION OF CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER.

    QUESTIONS ARE BEING ASKED------
DID MESSER CUT A DEAL WITH THE MAYOR TO GET THIS APPOINTMENT IF MESSER WOULD PUSH TO GET THAT $400,000 EDIT MONEY FOR SCRIBNER PLACE DEAL?

THAT $400,000 COULD SAVE THE SANITATION JOBS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:59 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Has anyone checked out the other bid proposals submitted at the Board of Works meeting? Did any of them offer an option concerning the trucks and still allow the current sanitation workers to retain their jobs? Was this really the "best" deal?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:15 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Yes, we are being played for a bunch of fools.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:41 PM, July 26, 2005

  • "THAT $400,000 COULD SAVE THE SANITATION JOBS."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Economic Development funds can't be used to fund the sanitation department.

How difficult is it to understand that EDIT money must be used for Economic Development. Same thing if the state gives us a grant for parks development, we can't use that for sanitation either.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:44 PM, July 26, 2005

  • WILL MESSER's OFFICE BE NEXT DOOR TO DESTINATIONS BOOK STORE.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:50 PM, July 26, 2005

  • EDIT MONEY can be used for any lawful
purpose. This was approved by State
Legislature as of July 1, 2005.

It does't take a genius to realize that EDIT could be used for some parts
of the budget and then, free up those
    funds to support Sanitation.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:07 PM, July 26, 2005

  • I GUESS THAT MESSER'S OFFICE WILL BE RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THE BOOK STORE.

IT WOULD SEEM FITTING AS THE BOOKSTORE
APPEARS TO HAVE A DIRECT LINE TO THE
MAYORS AND CITY CLERKS OFFICES TO HAVE ALL THE BREAKING NEWS OFF THE THIRD FLOOR OF CITY COUNTY BUILDING.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:11 PM, July 26, 2005

  • WILL MESSER HAVE THE GUMPTION TO RESIGN HIS SEAT ON THE CITY COUNCIL IF HE IS APPROVED FOR CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER?

IS IT LEGAL FOR CITY EMPLOYEES TO HOLD
SEATS ON THE CITY COUNCIL AND MAKE THE
DECISIONS ON THEIR SALARIES AND DEPARTMENTS.

I CAN'T REMEMBER HAVING SO MANY CITY
EMPLOYEES ON THE CITY COUNCIL MAKING
    THOSE DECISIONS

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:16 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Then again, it could just be paying attention.

The sanitation decision was announced at a press conference. The OEO decision occurred at an open-to-the-public meeting.

Nowhere near as exciting as goofball conspiracy theory but true just the same.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:45 PM, July 26, 2005

  • "It does't take a genius to realize that EDIT could be used for some parts
of the budget and then, free up those
    funds to support Sanitation."

But that doesn't solve the initial problem as you've stated yourself, supporting Sanitation. What needs to be done for Sanitation to support itself? If it's an increase in rates, fine. If it's privatization, fine. I'm willing to entertain any and all possibilities as a taxpayer, but what I don't want is just another "solution" that requires borrowing money from somewhere else.

Fix the problem, not support the problem.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:07 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Maybe everyone blogs too much at work, maybe that's the cities problem:

    Hoosiers working to avoid working

Seems we are the #2 state when it comes to wasting time at work when we should be working.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:24 PM, July 26, 2005

  • WERE THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS INFORMED OF THE PUBLIC PRESS CONFERENCE TO ANNOUNCE THE PRIVATIZATION OF THE
    SANITATION DEPARTMENT?

WAS THE CITY OCUNCIL GIVEN COPIES OF THE PROPOSED COMPANIES TO PRIVITAZIZE?

WHEN AND WHERE WERE THESE BIDS OPENED?

    WAS THE PUBLIC INFORMED?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:26 PM, July 26, 2005

  • The word

INVESTIGATION becomes more important every day that this City Administration operates. How can this
    be allowed to go on?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:27 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Thanks for the link to that wonderfully written article. I wish I had that kind of talent to express my feelings on such a touchy subject.

By Blogger edward parish, at 5:03 PM, July 26, 2005

  • wake up you illiterate bunch of malcontents, most progressive cities privitze their sanitation departments. We are trying to make this city progressive but you little people just want to block progress and call for investigations of the mayor, a mayor who has the guts to do the right thing, see yu in '07, who do you have smart enough to take us out?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:21 PM, July 26, 2005

  • The city council has nothing to do with the decision. Why would they be given materials to make it?

How can what go on? The mayor made a decision that's his to make, so, yeah, that will probably continue. Whether you agree with it or not is a totally different issue.

All this crapola make believe stuff isn't doing the sanitation workers any good. In fact, it's making them look worse.

If you really want to support them, start gathering and organizing real information and present it in a way that doesn't make the "support team" look like a bunch of crazies.

At this point, any rational person who actually agrees that sanitation shouldn't be privatized would be extremely reluctant to say so out of fear of being associated with some of the comments made here.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:28 PM, July 26, 2005

  • ON ANOTHER COMMENT, IT SAID THAT COUNCILMAN JACK MESSER, THE MAYORS CHOICE FOR CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, HAS HIS OWN GRASS CUTTING BUSINESS.

HE IS ON POLICE PAYROLL, COUNCIL PAYROLL AND NOW CODE ENFORCEMENT PAYROLL.

DOES THIS CITY ADMINISTRATION THINK THAT WE ARE ALL DEAF, DUMB AND BLIND?

CAN MESSER POLICE THEM, CITY COUNCIL
VOTE, CODE ENFORCE THEM AND ALSO
CUT THE GRASS WITH HIS BUSINESS AND CHARGE THE CITY?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:13 PM, July 26, 2005

  • I heard that Messer wanted to take the
salaries for the Sewer Board members and divide the dollars up among the City Council members.

    Is that true?

If you think today is crazy in New Albany----- just wait until tomorow.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:17 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Who asked the city council to appropriate money to replace the red trucks that are causing a lot of the problems?

    Donnie Blevins.

Did the union speak out and help him get public support for that?

    No.

Who voted to pass the budget that kept sanitation workers from being laid off months ago?

    Donnie Blevins

Did the union speak out then to support their brother while he was passing the budget?

    No.

    Roger Baylor

    Randy Smith

    James Garner

    Brandon Smith

    Opie Taylor

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:46 PM, July 26, 2005

  • Who is allowed to "nominate" a person for the OEO position? Does the City Council get final approval? Will Messer's other city positions be affected?
As for the "too bad" progressive thinkers, this was a real ugly move any way you look at it.
The Sanitation Dept. operated OUT OF the Sewer Fund for several years and did not indeed have a budget from which to become overspent. They paid it out of the Sewer Fund to find out how much it WAS costing, and Garner has decided it's "too expensive", and this is an appropriate place to trim the budget, or grow the budget.
The only thing I've heard is that the Sanitation Dept. is "too expensive", not that it's over-budget. Thus, either ante up, or shut up, right?
Tell me, how different is this from "pay up" or shut up?
So, New Albany IS becoming a caste society.
Don't "fix" anything the lower classes are clamoring about, just price 'em out of here huh?
Why am I seeing so many chides of:
"If you don't like it, move"? It's coming from everyone. But, for different reasons.
Those reasons are most often based on differences of class. After all, who really wants to live in the same neighborhood with your favorite garbageman?
Don't forget your demographics Mr. Mayor, it might give you trouble.

  • Where does the term POLITICAL POWER
fit in the Mr. Messer's record?

    Mr. Messer is--

    POLICEMAN - CITY PAID
    COUNCILMAN- MEMBER- CITY PAID
    REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION MEMBER
    CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER- CITY PAID

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:04 PM, July 26, 2005

  • This is truly a sad day for New Albany.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:07 AM, July 27, 2005

  • east ender: Got some real additional facts you might be interested in hearing. Are you aware that Donnie Blevins has his 2 siblings on Sanitation Payroll? So My Information is - "BLEVINS CUT A DEAL WITH GARNER!". So he can still have a job and cover his relatives job and sold the Sanitation people out to save his "OWN ASS". Think about it! And my information also tells me Blevins is going after Randy Hamptons job as Head of the Street Dept. (Are you all still with me) Now listen very closely to what I am about to say ok! Blevins has a City furnished car, free gas, free cell phone and has family on the payroll. So for Garner to get the $400,000.00 Blevins Vote to pull this Big Con Job off on all of us. Godfather Garner made him (Blevin's) an offer he could not REFUSE! Just think about it! It sure makes sense doesn't it? Option (1) You lose your job. Or Option (2) Give me your vote and keep a job! And your family keeps there job. But you will have to sell out your Sanitiation workers. What would be your choice Taxpayers? Does this sound like History repeating itself? (Are you all still with me) In 2002-2003 We had basically the same sisution with Overton. She was going to lay off the newest 3 Fireman and it just so happen Larry Kocherts Son was one of the three. So if you had been sitting at many, many, many Council Meetings you will know that Larry Kochert voted Overton's way to give her what she wanted and his son did not get laid off. Then Overton threaten to Privatize the Sanitation Dept. And again threaten to also lay off Employees? Am I jogging any of your Memory's? And the people of New Albany Protested. And we were willing to pay more to keep the employee's from being laid off! Rember the Shame Shame T-Shirts we all wore? Again the plan was to get a higher Sanitation rate out of The Taxpayers. And it worked. They all kept their jobs and Overton got more money to spend! And "BY GOD SHE" DID SPENT US RIGHT INTO BANKRUPCY!!!! So everytime Overton Needed money for her "PET PROJECTS" She threaten to Lay off Police, Fire Dept.,Sanitation Workers? So what do you all think Garner is doing? He's telling us on TV. That he is prepared to sign an 8 Year Contract. And they will not raise our rates for 2 Years? But I say to you what happens the 3rd Year? 4th Year? and thru the duration of an 8 Year Contract? (Which is a no real problem for Garner because he is a 1 term Mayor) So Garner also cuts a deal with Jack Messer! He needs Jack's vote also to help pass for the $400,000.00. So can anyone really believe and Convince me or you. That Jack Messer is going to give up a $50,000.00 dollar a year job for The pay of a Code Enforcement Officer for less money? I ask you Laura would you take a 15,000.00- 20,000.00 dollar a year cut in pay? So I say to you Laura and Citizens of New Albany What is Messers Aganda? What else comes in this package deal? What kind of shady deals is this Adminstration making with these Council Members? To get the votes for $400,000.00 For Scribner Place. I personally am not willing to pay this price are you? If we really want the answers what we really need to do is: (1) To Demand a Full Investigation! (2) Ask The City Council to recend the $400,000.00 Loan. We the Citizens of New Albany are being Lied to by this Adminstration.

  • concern taxpayer-- After reading your comments this does make alot of sense. And I believe your RIGHT! Mayor Garner had to be worried how the vote for the $400,000.00 would go. Since it seems he was not going to get enough if any money from The County Council. And Garner knowing what an out cry the people of New Albany would make over these lay offs. Who in the Hell would take that kind of cut in pay! Sounds like to me the "GOOD OLE BOYS ARE WORKING OVERTIME". Cutting deals.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:31 PM, July 27, 2005

  • Shirley--the reason it can't be done anymore is that a recent audit shows that the sewer dept. lost a large amount of money last month----for the first time in years, the entity that has propped up the sanitaion dept. is losing money due to poor management. The mayor and especially the sewer board are implementing damage control----a lot of salaries and other costs are taken care of by the sewer utility and now they are in trouble---this whole thing is more about the sewer utility than the sanitation dept. The sewer dept has always run this city when money is needed. They still have money in the bank--but are now losing money---and over the years a lot have people have picked up cash through the utility. You would be amazed at the things that are funded through this utility. ask questions at the special meeting on wed the 3rd.----mindy dixon

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:35 PM, July 27, 2005

  • I'm all for learning and the truth. That's why I think concern taxpayer should take his information to the prosecutor. That way, if what CT says is true, we'll all know and charges can be filed.

Then again, if what he/she says isn't true, he/she will be in the right place to turn his/herself in.

What better way to get to the truth? Put all the cards on the table.

By Blogger Jeff Gillenwater, at 1:35 PM, July 27, 2005

  • After reading earlier posts--just a few comments
The sewer utility does not have a budget either--the sewer board really needs to be reorganized--as the president suggested--the council members should not be on the board---believe it or not their board positions arejust as powerful as their council positions--maybe more.

The Blevins situation is bad--but put yourself in his shoes--two years ago he was a tipper--now if he speaks out against privitization he will lose his job--he has to make a choice whether to keep quiet or eat----I cannot blame him for the choice-but I can blame the mayor for applying the pressure.

By The Way--Gahan is the one that called for the public meeting over the sanitation issue--which is not even a council issue--do you think the mayor is happy about this?? They have tried to kill it but it seems it will happen----my question is why did he have to initiate the meeting---shouldn't tony toran (head of operations) be in charge of this????????

Also people have been moving out of NA for years--this is not new--our city population has been at about thirty-eight thousand for the past 40 years---(I blame zoning for this)---the difference is we have not annexed any residential areas for a number of years---this is how we always kept our second class city status (35,000) over the years---time for more annexation--it needs to happen.

AND----prepare for a possible sewer increase---overton raised bills 49%--when over 60% was needed--now they are losing money--it is either higher bills---or get more customers through expansion--the lines are there---I favor expansion of the customer base and keep the bills down---but believe me---something will have to happen if the sewer utility continues to lose mony in addition to what they give out to sanitation.

Do you think Johnny'll get his chicken back? Hopefully CT told them about that, too.

  • bluegill, I find your smart comment funny, life is too short for that type BS....Ask all the questions you like, doesnt mean anyone will answer you nor do they need to, but you can take this to the bank, He/She (the right person) has given the correct info /facts to the right people and things are underway and this doesnt mean CT is responable to given information, just stating he/she does know what they are talking about!

  • bluegill..Have you ever considered running for office in New Albany? Why do you have such a hang up on Anonymous Post. See it is outsiders like you with a personal agenda to try to make people think you really care about this town.alot of people feel threaten by what C/T has to say. Because people in this townbelieve we are not treated Equal. We do have many: Have and have nots. And people are being tired of being lied too..I guess when the smoke clears "WE CAN ALL MOVE IN SCRIBNER PLACE"

  • Good lord, the bar must've closed.

But, hey. I'm a good sport: What's my personal agenda?

  • bluegill.. What do you think is wrong with New Albany? Other than too many little people. And money being wasted? What is the solution?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:53 AM, July 28, 2005

  • Gillenwater does not live in NA, he just bought a home here and plans to move in the historic district.
    GET OFF HIS BACK.

  • According to yesterday's Tribune, Mr. Messer will retain his postiion on the police force and become the new Code Enforcement Officer and not get a pay raise? Who are they trying to kid?

Would any of you work for nothing?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:46 AM, July 28, 2005

  • att- deep throat

For your info-- Gillenwater stood up at a Board of Works Meeting and said that his address was 1320 E. Market in New Albany and asked for a Street
    Demonstration Permit.

Why did he not tell the truth if you say that he does not live in New Albany?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:53 AM, July 28, 2005

  • It's difficult to give a permanent address when you live in an RV. It's really freed me up since Mitch got his new one.

I thought I'd found a permament parking spot once we got that train thing taken care of but then the guys at Cinergy screwed it up. Damn unions.

  • Sometimes I wish that you could at least see an IP address associated with each post. Leave names anonymouse, at least let me see what connection all of these anonymous conspiracy theory posts are coming from.

Something tells me it's 1 person posting 20 times.

Conversations with yourself can be fun, but it's something you need to get checked out.

  • It wouldn't be an effective Republican tool if you did that, though.

  • Dude I guessed it was you.

  • STORMWATER ADVISORY COMMITTEE

This committee is meeting Thursday at
6PM on 3rd floor of City County Building.

They will be discussing the amount of
fees to be placed on taxpayers for
    Stormwater and Drainage. How much?

Does anyone know who the Mayor appointed to this committee?

  • Shoot, just put Jack Messer's office in Destination Booksellers as it should be available soon. And it's Destination BookSELLERS, not BookSTORE,although I'd agree that BookSTORE would be a more appropriate name as there is not a lot of selling going on over there. Personally I feel he should have opened a bed and breakfast. Lots of savvy people around that could have helped him. Probably too much self inflicted damage done for that now. Oh well.....some people are their own worst enemy..

  • gee wally you think vally annie can save the garbage workers, nah beave shes too busy investigating the mayor

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:35 PM, July 28, 2005

  • There can't be anything funnier in the whole wide world than one anonymous screaming at another anonymous about a third anonymous's posting.

And yet all three agree that they're real people and all outsiders are bad, bad news.

Like I've said all along, it must be something in the water other than the sewage. But I've lived here my whole life.

    Strange ...
