Progressives and the "little people"

You know, I have to agree with the progressive's point about the term "little people". It has a degrading connotation to it, and it should be changed into something more suitable. Suggestions everyone. Think of how you want to be perceived, and give yourselves a dignified name.
Sounds pretty stupid doesn't it? With everything that's going on, let's worry about what the labels are. There are only 2 labels that really count around New Albany anymore, the powerful, and the powerless.
Right down economic lines too. May as well be the rich and the poor. Or better yet, the labels that say it best, the "haves" and the "have-nots".
If there is one MAJOR problem in this little town, it's the fact that there is too much power in the hands of too few people. How many Boards, and Commissions, and Councils, can any one person serve? How many salaries can one earn? How many cars are we paying for?
I understand some Council Members are sitting on 8 or 9 different committees. Is this even within the legal boundaries? If it is, it should't be. This can only lead to temptations of corruption, flirting with abuse of power, and killing the Democracy that we are all supposed to be living in. Enough with the political favoritisms and deals done behind closed doors.
I've walked those hallways at City Council meetings for a reason. You would be surprised how much you hear out there. But, the main show has gotten to be such a mockery of a true political process, as it should be...one that represents the people, that I can hardly bear to go anymore. Many have imploded into shouting matches between Council Members.
It's as unprofessional as it can be without bordering on Soap Oopera drama, and as worthless as the time I could be spending watching something much more entertaining, and not quite as scary, on HBO. Very different from the way the County Councils are presided over.
The deals are done before they take their seats, but all they know about what each other is doing, or saying, is what they've read in our little piece of a local newspaper, and the minor attention we receive in the Louisville Metro newspaper. But noboddy's talking to anybody else.
New Albany is full of people who are very different from one another. Some areas flourish, others are left to deteriorate. Often depends on your councilman's worth. Can't be based on real need. It's a selective, calculated move in everything that gets done through the "system" we've got going on here right now. "All depends on who 'ya know!" Familiar? Sadly, yes.
New Albany is a very small town, one where most folks know most of the other folks. One where most people know all the streets. And still, we are divided.
We continue to divide ourselves with opinions and labels. So, what's to be done now?
The administration continues to dole out positions to people already on the "inside", leaving the circle of Power among a very small group. This leads to questions of propriety.
So, one must decide to try to get on the best side of that Power structure, or one fights against it. I am appalled at some of the insensitive things I've seen written about the Sanitation workers jobs. It is not what I expected out of what I always thought was a close knit community.

  • Shoot, just put Jack Messer's office IN Destination Booksellers as it should be available soon. And it's Destination BookSELLERS, NOT BookSTORE, although I'd agree that BookSTORE would be a more appropriate name as there is not a lot of selling going on over there. I Personally think He should have opened a Bed and Breakfast. Lots of savvy people around that could have helped him. Probably too much self inflicted damage done for that now. Oh well....some people are their own worst enemy.

  • The Little Peoples Point of View: Your comments Laura on "Little People" It has a degrading connotation to it, and it should be changed into something more suitable. Think of how you want to be preceived, and give yourselves a dignified name. In this town of New Albany we have 3 different labels. Not 2! I personally feel labels are Wrong. The 3 labels in this town is the "haves" and the "have-nots" and then the New Albany's "Little People". We all understand your point Laura on the haves- and have-nots. But just maybe you needed to "Look" alittle deeper into the New Albany Little People. What many people are missing is: We have College Educated little People. Who was borned and raised in this town. And are living and working, and raising their families here. As well as the Hard Working Wealthy Little People. Who one day by visiting our town. Decided to stay. And start a Business. Who also saw potiential in our town. Thru hard work and rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty. And making things happen. They turned their dream into a success. And everyday strive to help others. And They now call New Albany home. And the Working Little People who live pay check to pay check. Take pride in owning a home. Looking out for their neighbor's and help out and doing their Civic Duties. And then we have The Retired Senior's who are also Little People. Who can be retired fireman,Police officer, Union workers, clerks, etc. Who share their knowledge with the neighborhood kids. Vote and struggle to get by. The little People are people who play by the rules. And New Albany's Little People give back regardless of the amount of money in there check book. Little people do not have a motive for what they say or do..Nor gain for Power. They want to be informed. They want to understand. They want to learn. And most of all they want to have a "Voice". So in making these comments I say to you Laura and others. Am I degrading my self by saying I am Proud to be one of many New Albany's Little People. Are we not dignified to stand up for what is right! And the things we believe in! Just stop and think about it.

We are the PUBLIC and we should be

  • democracy -
[Gr.,=rule of the people], term originating in ancient Greece to designate a government where the people share in directing the activities of the state, as distinct from governments controlled by a single class, select group, or autocrat. The definition of democracy has been expanded, however, to describe a philosophy that insists on the right and the capacity of a people, acting either directly or through representatives, to control their institutions for their own purposes. Such a philosophy places a high value on the equality of individuals and would free people as far as possible from restraints not self-imposed. It insists that necessary restraints be imposed only by the consent of the majority and that they conform to the principle of equality.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:44 AM, July 29, 2005

  • THE REASON GAHAN WILL NOT LET YOU SPEAK IS THAT IT IS NOT A COUNCIL ISSUE AND IS NOT ON THE AGENDA!!!

THERE WAS A MOTION BY MESSER TO RAISE GARBAGE RATES 50%-BUT THAT WAS TAKEN OFF OF THE AGENDA YESTERDAY---IF IT HAD STAYED, THEN THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN DISCUSSION AT THAT TIME

THAT IS WHY GAHAN IS SCHEDULING A PUBLIC FORUM FOR WEDNESDAY THE 3RD WHERE HE WILL LET YOU SPEAK AS LONG AS YOU WANT!!!HOWEVER THE MAYOR IS FIGHTING THIS AND HAS ASKED HIM TO DELAY IT A WEEK.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:39 AM, July 29, 2005

  • One proud anonymous said:

"So Baylor do you then consider yourself a Little People?"

At 6'4" and 270 lbs, no.

In a cosmological sense, we're all "little people" -- individuals in a big world.

    Another proud anonymous screamed:

THE PROGRESSIVES WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME SLAMMING THE WORD "PRIDE".

Of course, and who would even try, because pride can be felt by anyone regardless of his or her background.

When Laura "agreed" with the progressives, she implicitly acknowledged that there is a prgressive movement, and in responding to Laura's statement, several of you have contrasted your beliefs with those that you describe as progressive.

You're saying that your beliefs, whatever they are, are different from progressive beliefs.

The opposite of "progressive" is "regressive." The opposite of "little" is "big."

But somehow I don't think you want to be categorized as regressive little people, hence the problem with "little people."

It might help to make a list of what you are for, rather than what you're against. For good government, efficient services, value for your tax dollars, and so on.

However, progressives are for these things, too.

Now, you can heap whatever abuse on me that you like, but bear in mind that my late father felt just like many of you. I grew up with this way of thinking. He always thought of himself as a "little person," and sometimes he became just as angry and frustrated as any of you. Nothing wrong with any of that; feelings are feelings, and emotions are emotions -- and each and every person has them.

The question is this: Is being "little" a permanent condition and an unchangeable station in life, or isn't it?

If it is, then what hope is there for improvment in standards of living? And don't we all, irrespective of self-chosen labels, want to see everyone have the chance to do better, to have greater opportunities, to fulfill their potential?

And if this is true of people, can't it be true of cities, too?

That's the crux of the issue, at least to me.

First of all, I never considered the Little People as regressive, just because a group of people prefers to call themselves progressives.

Ultimately, it comes down to association. If you wish to be part of a group, and if that group advocates policies that are regressive, then you're apt to be identified as regressive yourself.

Among those frequenting this site, you and Laura are virtually alone in opting to be yourselves. You're to be commended for it. Your comrades opt to slur, abuse and insult, and they hide while doing it.

That's regressive, and since you're part of the group ... see what I mean.

So, please, Shirley ... as one who is open and honest about your identity, exactly how do you defend your colleagues here?

Just curious. They're unable, or more likely unwilling, so I thought you might be.

AND SHOULD BE ON TOP OF THE INFORMATION-------BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO FACE THE PUBLIC--- THIS IS NOTHING BUT A PAIN IN THE ASS FOR GAHAN ANYWAY---THERE ARE NO POLITICAL POINTS TO BE GAINED HERE--AND THE MAYOR IS UPSET THAT HE IS DOING THIS---THE FACT IS THE MAYOR SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS TWO WEEKS AGO,

BTW--REMEMBER---THIS IS GOING TO TURN OUT TO BE ABOUT THE SEWER UTILITY ---NOT THE SANITATION DEPT.

I never thought that I would have to put a block on a community blogspot on the internet so that my children would not be reading your foul language.

Please try to have some decency and watch your language. Do you have small children or, do you have relatives with children who might be reading your comments?

If you continue to post such vulgar language, please list the word OBSCENE OR VULGAR at the top of your postings.

You know that our children are very
    sharp on computer technology today.

    Signed, A caring parent.

  • I AGREE WITH MR. MAURICE KING. I ALSO
SPOKE WITH COUNCILMAN SCHMIDT AND HE TOLD ME THAT AS VICE PRESIDENT OF THE NEW ALBANY CITY COUNCIL THAT HE TOLD
PRESIDENT GAHAN THAT HE FELT THAT ALL
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE ENTITLED TO SPEAK IN THE PUBLIC PORTION OF THE COUNCIL MEETING.

I WONDER WHERE THE TRIBUNE IS GETTNG THEIR NEWS FOR ARTICLES.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:13 PM, July 31, 2005

  • Why must CM Gahan host a forum, and why must CM Schmidt be involved at all, when all you have to do is rent a hall and have a Speak Out Loud NA forum of your own?

I'm sure one of the churches would let you use their place.

Call the newspapers & television stations, and organize it yourselves.

    Why not?

  • Why does the Mayor pick on the Sanitation Department to solve the city cash problems? Do you know how much of the City Budget is used up by the Police and Fire Departments?

We should ask for that figure.

Why doesn't the Mayor privatize the
Police and Fire Departments and then
we could solve all of our cash problems and that could fund the whole city.

Let's see what Police Dept costs us.

TAKE HOME CARS OUT OF THE COUNTY?
GASOLINE TO AND FROM HOME ?
    CELL PHONES ?
    CLOTHING ALLOWANCE ?
    HEALTH INSURANCE ?
    RETIREMENT COSTS ?

    AND..... REMEMBER....DON'T LET THE
POLICE OR FIRE DEPARTMENTS SPEAK OUT
    AT PUBLIC COUNCIL MEETINGS.

DON'T WORRY, GUYS, PRES GAHAN WILL
TREAT YOU LIKE HE TREATS SNAITATION
AND HOLD A PUBLIC FORUM ON AN OFF
    NIGHT FOR YOU.

  • Dear Mookie,
That would take someone being PROGRESSIVE and that ain't happen' so get over it. Typical NA WASP, set around and bitch, then cry foul when things don't go their way.

My neighbor, who is 80 came over today and suggested maybe the State of Indiana will see things are running amuck and will send in the Daniels RV.

Oh yeah Mookie I almost forgot, there is only one team I hate more than the Mets and that would be Charleston River Dogs parent club; the Yankees.

  • MESSER WILL PROBABLY LOSE VOTE---HE HAS 2 MAYBE THREE CRUMP NOT THERE THE REST WILL ABSTAIN OR VOTE AGAINST---ONLY SURE VOTES HE HAS ARE BLEVINS AND GAHAN---MAYBE SEABROOK.

BTW---SINCE THE MAYOR AND TORAN WILL NOT BE AT THE FORUM ON WEDNESDAY----GAHAN IS GOING TO ALLOW COMMENTS ABOUT THE SEWER-SANITATION PROBLEM AT THE MEETING ON MONDAY BECAUSE THE MAYOR WILL BE THERE AND IT IS HIS BUSINESS ANYWAY.

BTW--THE MAYOR WILL BE WAVING A REPORT(AUDIT) IN HIS HAND FROM M.E. AND TUCKER---THAT THE SEWER UTILITY IS LOSING A LOT OF MONEY HE WILL SAY HE LEARNED IT AT 4:00 IN THE AFTERNOON--LIE---THE SEWER BOARD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS FOR 3 WEEKS-----THIS IS WHY HE IS PRIVITIZING THE SANITATION DEPT. HE HAS TO PUT THE BLAME SOMEWHERE---I MEAN SOME PEOPLE BETTER WAKE UP AND QUESTION THE SEWER UTILITY---NOT SANITATION---THE SEWER UTILITY DRIVES THE CITY---LAST MONTH THEY LOST SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 200-400K---THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THE BONDS EXCEPT OUT OF RESERVES---PLUS THE UTILITY EMPLOYEES PEOPLE THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE UTILITY AND THAT IS WHERE THE MAYOR'S VEHICLES COME FROM---WE HAD A PAST MAYOR WHO THE OLD CRONIES CLAIM RAKED THE UTILITY FOR 2 MILLION----I WILL BE REALLY PISSED IF THE MAYOR AND THE SEWER BOARD GET AWAY WITH BLAMING THEIR PROBLEMS ON SANITATION----BUT THEY WILL PROBABLY GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL AT DIVERTING ATTENTION-----AT ONE OF THESE MEETINGS SOMEONE NEEDS TO ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RECENT AUDIT OF THE UTILITY AND WHERE THE MONEY WENT----IT WAS NOT TO SANITATION.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:05 PM, July 31, 2005

  • better question is where did all the recycling money go since the city has not followed the law by properly disposing of its recycling?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:23 PM, July 31, 2005

  • good point---but if you as a worker you will find that the business that takes our stuff has been refusing more an more items--as the bottom has dropped out of the market---like when they started refusing cardboard a year or so ago
I SAY AGAIN KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL AND THAT BALL IS THE SEWER UTILITY

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:28 PM, July 31, 2005

  • SANITATION MAY BE A FAILURE AND I DON'T CARE IF THEY FIRE THEM PRIVITIZE OR WHAT-----BUT BECAUSE NEITHER ENTITY HAS A BUDGET IT IS HARD TO SHOW REAL FIGURES---IT WOULD NOT SURPRIZE ME IS THE SANITATION DEPT. LOSSES WERE ONLY 200-300 THOUSAND INSTEAD OF A MILLION--- AS FAR AS RECYCLING---AT LEAST THEY COULD HAVE MADE IT LOOK LIKE THEY WERE DOING THEIR WORK!!!! hELL. i SAW THEM DO THAT WITH MY GARBAGE LAST YEAR---ANSWER---TRUCK BROKE!!!

  • Anonymous said:

we the progressives will not be stopped by you lunacy, instead of little people we ought to call you village idiots, Cheers!

Nice try, but genuine progressives are neither anonymous, nor write this poorly.

and remember drink more Belgian ales, might clear up that bud "light" mentality

Bad beer is a disease that afflicts all segments of society, not just "little" people. Belgian ales are a good curative, but pricey. Perhaps you should stick to American-made craft beers, purchased from a local package store and not Wal-Mart.

  • Lotsa silence ... ambush coming?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:45 PM, August 01, 2005

  • Say all you followers of valla ann, dont you think it's strange that she didnt speak at the council meeting tonight and voice her support for the sanitation workers, humm maybe she was the source that leaked it to steve burgin after all she does have a tendency to contact TV stations about the city she wants to rule.

Maybe she thinks this was a way to get the Mayor in a jam.

"and its one two three four who are we fightin for dont ask me I dont give a damn our answer is valla ann."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:46 PM, August 01, 2005

  • She's smarter than most men. Most of you all underestimate her.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:02 PM, August 01, 2005

  • bring it on valla or whatever your name is

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:07 PM, August 01, 2005

  • You're making progress. At least you used your real name this time.

Now, tell the people here what you told me tonight about the sanitation workers: You agree with the Mayor on his plan.

    Go ahead Timmy, tell them.

By Blogger The New Albanian, at 12:03 AM, August 02, 2005

  • Hmm, that's amazing. Perhaps we really do agree on something.

By Blogger The New Albanian, at 12:21 AM, August 02, 2005

  • Leave Steve Price alone! This man is taking a stand for what he believe's in. And is not afraid to say it. And several of you think you can bully Price,Schmidt,Kochert,Coffey. THEY ARE "LOOKING OUT FOR THE TAXPAYERS" OF NEW ALBANY. Seems like other Council Members are looking out for them self and the Mayor. So I say to you Progressive trouble makers many of us in N/A can't be bought or believe their B/S by this Adminstration. Like you all have.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:16 AM, August 02, 2005

  • I think you've hit the nail on the head:

"Leave Steve Price alone! This man is taking a stand for what he believe's in."

Since when should a council member partake in a personal agenda? Shouldn't he be representing the people in his district and not his own obtuse views?

His district has fought the hardest to get the Ordinance Enforcement Officer, and he wouldn't even second a nomination to at least let it go to a vote.

So, until Steve Price listens to the people that live in his district, why should we leave him alone?

By Blogger TSOLfan, at 7:54 AM, August 02, 2005

  • These would be the very same "concern taxpayers" who for decades have threatened to set themselves alight on the steps of the City-County Building rather than pay increases in fees for garbage pick-up, and who now piously cry out to save the jobs of the sanitation workers.

Hypocritical -- yes, that certainly fits the bill here.

By Blogger The New Albanian, at 8:58 AM, August 02, 2005

  • Looks like judging by the silence, all of you are embarrassed and ashamed by Messer's putdown last night.

Let's hear those defences of people like Schmidt and Coffey, who keep saying they want to clean up the town, and had the chance last night to put their money where their mouths are.

Instead, they put it somewhere else, and most of you know that if it was wrong to take jobs away from the garbage workers, it is just as wrong to diss Messer last night.

The Mt. Rushmore of good old boy, business as usual - the heads of Schmidt, Coffey, Kochert and Price.

Tell us, little people, how do you defend cowardice?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:35 AM, August 02, 2005

  • I was not able to attend last nights meeting, but can we see the other proposals presented by the 3 other companies addressing the sanitation?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:45 AM, August 02, 2005

  • Concern Taxpayer, were you at the meeting last night? We really want to hear what you think.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:55 PM, August 02, 2005

  • This is from the Destinations Booksellers website:

"The public, but especially our regular patrons, are invited to come hear Mayor James Garner address the issues facing New Albany at our Summer Public Affairs Symposium on Tuesday evening, Aug. 2, 2005, at 7:30.

This 90-minute moderated question-and-answer session will give the public a chance to get answers about economic development, city services, Scribner Place, upcoming changes in user fees, the restructuring of the sanitation department, and more.

Please join us. It should be enlightening."

Will the Mayor discuss the other options he had to choose from when it comes to the sanitation department?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:58 PM, August 02, 2005

  • To all of the "Progressives". I find it very strange that you used to make fun of Jack Messer, calling him "Jack of a Lesser Mind" and Bev Crump, calling her "Easy to Stump". But when they both endorsed the Scribner Place project, all of a sudden they were "Einsteins". How can people's IQ's jump by so many points over night?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:13 PM, August 02, 2005

  • Anything's possible if you're willing to learn. I used to think that the Mayor was a chump -- until I listened to the Gang of Four speak, and then the true nature of the threat became very obvious.

By Blogger The New Albanian, at 2:30 PM, August 02, 2005

  • Gee Wally and Beav, how long does one have to live in this open air museum before not being considered an outsider? Tell me.

Progressive thinking is going to win over hands down, just look around you and what do you see?

For the people that have move in here over the last few years and want something different, bring it on because it is way over do.

  • Gang Of Four vs Progressive Gang Of Four...Interesting!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:21 PM, August 03, 2005

  • New Albany's Modern Mayor

    I'm a modern Mayor. I wear a pin-striped suit,
I'm full of deep compassion, when I give someone the boot.
My I.Q. may be average,(when compared to my pay),But the last time some poor fool did that, he was sacked without pay.
I'm a modern Mayor, I listen and consult, I'm open to suggestions if it helps me get results.
And as long as you rember this, My Progressive Gang of Four, we'll get along just fine:
The idea may belong to you- but the credit is all mine!
I'm a modern Mayor, a leader through and through, When ever there's a job I hate, I delegate to My Progressive Gang Of FOUR!
If you can't stand the pressure,
I know it won't seem fair, But at least when things go belly up- the buck stops over there!
I'm a modern Mayor,Progressive-male and white, Of course, we have good women here, but we keep them out of sight.
I'm a modern Mayor, I get richer by the day, My options worth squillions, while you get base pay.
I know it must be difficult, my little people say. But tell someone who cares, I've got better things to do.
I'm a modern Mayor, it really can be tough, To make the hard decisions when things are getting rough.
Especially when we cut back, and we got to trim the fat, But I guarantee,it won't be me, you can be quite sure of that!
I'm a modern Mayor, I'm really not that bad, I had an awful dream last night- Valla Ann found out you've all been had.
So if one day I fall from grace, and you throw me out, what then?
I'll simply find another job- and do it all again!
I am the MAYOR, I am the BOSS,
If you don't like it, it's your big loss!
