Council Meeting

Well, what another fine evening of listening to our esteemed Mayor yell at the Council members. If it was any more hostile, Chief Harl wouldn't be the only guy in the room with a gun.
I am sad to say that my disappointment in Mayor Garner grows more every time I hear him speak. How does he justify building swimming pools and giving out raises while he dismantles the city's sanitation department? The YMCA could still happen, but not the pools if we can't maintain our sanitation department.
He talks in circles, insists on pushing things through before all information is known, and reacts like a spoiled child when questioned about alternatives to his plans.
I believe that anyone in such a position should be bit more professional about things, and should be able to keep a level head and controlled temper when confronted on the issues. There is no professionalism when it comes to Garners time at the podium.
To add insult to injury, as he passed the gentleman seated in front of me, he leaned over and made a smirking grunt, as if to imply "see, I got the best of them, and you will never win this one". I about fell out of my seat. I don't know who the gentleman was, but he was adult enough to ignore the cheap shot.
Anyway, I'm way too tired tonight to go into all that occured, and I had to leave before the thing was finished.
So, I will get the details on the remainder of the evening, and put them together with my thoughts about the first portion of the night, and will post again on Saturday.
Meanwhile, everyone feel free to comment about your thoughts on how this evening went.

  • I heard that Councilman Schmidt passed out some papers to the Council members and said that the 2003 shortfall for the Sanitation Dept was -$34,333 and not -$892,000 as has been quoted by Garner. Mr. Schmidt said he got those figures from the 2003 State Board of Accounts Audit.

He said that a report from Ms. Garry said that the 2004 Sanitation shortfall was -$ 37,677.

    The large shortfalls are accumulated
figures over a period of years.

On July 23, 2005, Mayor Garner, in
    a newspaper article, Mayor Garner
stated that he was privatizing to eliminate a $900,000 annual deficit
    in the Sanitation Dept.

It is not a $900,000 deficit in one year, it is the accumulated shortage over a period of years.

  • First of all I am sorry this is so long. But I am the "CONCERN TAXPAYER" and I have alot to say! Trust me you will enjoy this...

    east ender--The real "James Garner"
came out last night. He is not fit to run this City.

The Mayor showed his real colors last night and they were not red-white-blue! When Kay and Jimmy were hit with facts after facts. They started calling our Council Members liars. If I heard Mayor Garner say I don't Know 5 TIMES- at one count it was up to 15 I don't know!!!!

What a great Councilman Bill Schmidt you are! You made us all Proud last night! He not only had all the facts and numbers Mr. Schmidt did not back down.

When kay and Jimmy was confronted by Mr. Schmidt they tried to sugar coat the facts and the numbers.
But Mr. Schmidt continue to lay the real true facts on the table. So the taxpayers and Citizens of New Albany could finally hear the real truth.

Mayor Garner's only concern is building Scribner place! At what ever cost. Even at the cost of 26 Sanitation worker jobs.

As Mr. Schmidt said these are the facts Mr. Mayor!

And the real truth is that we the Taxpayers and Citizens of New Albany have been lied too!

For those who did not attend last nights Council Meeting. Councilman Bill Schmidt pulled out page after page of numbers and confronted this Mayor.

2003-Mayor claims Sanitation lost over $600,000.00. When Mr. Schmidt produced true figures of a loss of only $34,400.00.

2004- Mayor claims Sanitation lost around $900,000.00. When Mr. Schmidt in facted proved the loss has only been about $37,000.00.

And then the other exciting facts came out. Mr. Price with Budget and his facts in hand said: Mr. Mayor if you would stop buying things out of Sanitation like Cars-Suv's etc. Their would not be a loss!

Bravo Mr. Price! You again exposed Mr. Mayor for being a "Liar" to all of us Taxpayers!

The one thing that totally "OUTRAGED ME" more than anything was when City Atty. Shane Gibson stood up and verbally attacked Councilman Bill Schmidt and said: You really had to use your Brain to figure this out! And Mr. Schmidt fired back at least I have a Brain. And Mr. Schmidt said and my Concerns is for the People of New Albany!

Mr. Blevins if I ever hear you say
again at any future Council Meetings "People need to RESPECT Mayor Garner for the great job he is doing" their will be more than one of us thrown out of the Council Meeting I promise!

Jack Messer you are a total disappointment!
If you look at the facts and figures like we have for the last several years. You would stop making excuses. How dare you accuse experience well rounded Council Members of playing the "Blame game". Do your damn homework like the rest of us taxpayers and citizens.

And make decisions based on facts and numbers "Not what James Garner wants."

Bev Crump: You never stop amazing me. How you can sit their and agree with what Mayor Garner wants and vote based on what he wants and not listen to your folks who elected you! Shame on you! How you have made your living in Real Estate boggles me!
(Your on the top of my christmas list for a "NEW" calculator) cause you sure need one.

I would like to Thank You Councilman Bill Schmidt for his hard work and long hours he puts in to stand before the Citizens and taxpayers of New Albany with facts and numbers. We all need to know the truth.

    Concern Taxpayer

  • Thank God we have Bill Schmidt on the council. He sure put Garner is his place last night.

Concern Taxpayer, you really said it like it is, as always

  • It was worth reading Concern Taxpayer. And I have a message to give to Councilman Schmidt:
You are truly a Champion for the people of New Albany.
And I hope more truth comes out in the next meeting. I also was floored at the Mayor's attack on Councilman Schmidt!
    Thank You Councilman Schmidt

Thank You Mr. Schmidt for telling us the truth.

    Thank you Bill

  • I was shocked at Mayor Garner's attacks. Especially when he told Councilman Dan Coffey don't humilate me in front of the people.
Mr. Mayor you are a liar and you humilate us all. Into thinking only what you want us to think.
Thank You Councilman... Mr. Schmidt, Mr. Price and Mr. Coffey..

  • No wonder Concern Taxpayers says "Were mad as hell, and fed up with this Adminstration"
Great comments concern taxpayer. Our family agrees with everything you say.

  • James Garner is an embarrassment to this city.

Thank you Mr Schmidt, Mr. Coffey, Mr Price you showed us what dignity is all about.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:25 PM, September 09, 2005

  • James Garner is a fine man from a fine family that is deep rooted in this community. Any reference to his not caring and self serving way is just plain wrong. You people need to grow up and quit this needless blogging crap. If you want to make a difference, volunteer, help somebody, donate to the needy. Actions speak louder that words and we need a progressive path to move toward.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:14 PM, September 09, 2005

  • Sorry, they didn't hear you!

They are to busy patting themselves on the back!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:19 PM, September 09, 2005

  • Nobody is patting themself on the back, but we are relieved that the sanitation workers kept their jobs.

If your mayor was so concerned about the community he would not have put Scribner Place ahead of decent citizens, and taxpayers who by the way pay his salary.

  • YES--LAURA-- I WANT TO SPEAK OUT LOUD.

    FRIDAY TRIBUNE HEADLINES,
"CITY WEIGHS SANITATION AND SCRIBNER PLACE."

WHAT A BIG DECISION! HOW DO YOU VOTE?

    1. LAY OFF 26 LOYAL CITY WORKERS

    OR

    2. GIVE THE ELITE A NEW SWIMMING
    POOL.

  • Anonymous--- I vote to keep the jobs of those who work so hard every day
in the heat and cold weather to clean up our city.

What kind of human feelings are the people who are pushing this SCRIBNER
DEAL regardless of all human suffering.?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:50 PM, September 09, 2005

  • SCRIBNER PLACE FUNDING

OK-- MR. MAYOR, WHY DON'T YOU PLACE A SPECIAL TAX ON ALL OF THE BUSNINESS IN
NEW ALBANY TO PAY FOR SCRIBNER PLACE.

THIS IS REALLY THE WAY TO GO SINCE ALL OF THE BUSINESSES ARE PLANNING TO GROW
    FROM SCRIBNER PLACE BEING HERE.

PS--- YOU COULD GIVE YOUR CLEANING BUSINESS A TAX EXEMPTION.

  • What about Tribune article on Friday
about Councilman / Policeman Messer being placed on unpaid suspension by Chief Haarl ?

That must be difficult on Chief Haarl as Messer was the Mayor's first choice for Messer to be appointed Code
    Enforcement Officer .

Is that why Chief Haarl then appointed the woman? Lots of questions floating around the City-County Building.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:40 PM, September 09, 2005

  • Oh, what a coincidence. The Tribune article today states that
Officer Messer was put on unpaid
suspension due to an incident on August 23, 2005.

Then, if you look back to August 24, 2005, that was the day that Chief Harl announced that he had assigned
one of his staff, Ms. Badger to be
    Ordianace Enforcement Officer.

  • Boy Mr. Schmidt you put this Council in a tail spin last night!!! The other members sit there like saying "What the hell" just happen?
When you got the Mayor with all the facts and numbers. He spat and sputtered. Boy what a mistake I made for Voting for Garner. Thanks job well done.

  • IT'S ABOUT TIME THIS TOWN GOT A GOOD DOZE OF TRUTH.
    THANKS BILL!

  • Did anyone hear the Mayor give the reason why he could not park his $35,000.00 SUV?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:28 AM, September 10, 2005

  • Garners only answer to not parking his SUV was that he is on "duty" 24/7!!!
When's the last time anyone has seen the Mayor called into work in the off hours?
If he suggests he's available 24/7, I think we ought to take him up on it.
CM Schmidt is the best citizens advocate we have. Thank you for all the work you have put into finding the truth for the sanitation department.
$37K in the red is a whole lot different than $900K.
Is it lies, or just plain stupidity?

By Blogger East Ender, at 3:36 AM, September 10, 2005

  • Come on, Laura. I enjoy your thoughts and blog, but let's get real. Any Mayor is on duty 24/7 and that is no difference with James Garner.

At first you were pointing out your differences and concerns with the administration, now your straight being hateful.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:41 PM, September 10, 2005

  • east ender: Will you please pull out your calculator. I think this information will be very interesting!

    Mayor wanted:
    $400,000 X 16YR = $6,400,000

    City Council agreed:
    $263,000 X 16YR = $4,208,000

    County Pledge (?):
    $137,000 X 16YR = $2,192,000

    City/County Total Pledge:
    $6,400,000.00

We the Taxpayers of New Albany are paying $6,400,000.00 for a Natatorium Only.
(For many of us Little People that word Natatorium means swimming pool)

    In addition to Caesar's Pledge:
$17,000,000.00 For clean up and the actual YMCA. For a grand total of: $23,400,000.00 Dollars.

And we all heard Mayor Garner say on Sept.8,2005 City Council meeting he would need at least $400,000.00 a year from the City to just start the project? So my question is how much is this "Swimming Pool" (Natatorium)really going to cost us taxpayers? $6,400,000.00 to me could build alot of swimming pools in New Albany!

Does this make you stop and think ?
And wonder why this is truly happening!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:36 AM, September 11, 2005

  • GREAT COMMENT, ANONYMOUS.

WHY IS THE MAYOR JUST TALKING ABOUT THE $400,000 IF THIS PROJECT COSTS
    A TOTAL OF $23,400,000 ?

I UNDERSTOOD THAT THE YMCA IS RAISING THEIR OWN FUNDS TO BUILD THE "Y".

THEN -- WHAT IS THE MAYOR GOING TO DO WITH THE WHOLE $23,400,000?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:44 AM, September 11, 2005

  • What a great bunch of business people we have in our City Administration.

They are planning a $23,400,000 swimming pool complex. They have not
said how they will pay the electric and water bill or heating bill.

What will the operation of this pool
    cost?

They won't have to worry about the
sewer bill because the Mayor is
the paid President of the Sewer Board and they will forgive the
sewer bill based on water used.

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CONCERN CITIZENS GROUP? WHOSE ON IT? WHAT'S GOING ON WITH IT? LAURA WHAT'S GOING ON?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:11 AM, September 12, 2005

  • Usually, most businesses use the income off of admissions to pay the bills.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:38 AM, September 12, 2005

  • I read in the paper some time ago that
County Councilman, Randy Stumler, wants to work with the Mayor to build a new City - County Building down there at Scribner Place.

We need to inform County Councilman
Randy Stumler that New Albany is nearly bankrupt now trying to keep up with all the perks this City Administration is allowing. We taxpayers have to cut our budgets to the bare bones and city officials should do that too.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:39 PM, September 12, 2005

  • You should be commended for what you do.Thank you for being our voice for the fine citizens of New Albany.Keep doing what you do best, speaking out!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:08 PM, September 12, 2005

  • Sanitation has not recieved any past due revenues collected since 2002. All collections of over due bills went directly to water co. and sewage.
The city has a contract with the public housing complexes to pick up garbage there, but nobody can find the contract. This was admitted at the Council meeting on Thursday the 8th of Sept.
If the sewer dept. is in such financial restraints, why did they allow Georgetown an extention on paying the $2million plus that they owe New Albany.
James Garner is Director of the Sewage Department as well, in case any of you didn't know that already (collecting salary too).
Does any of this sound like adequate or acceptable decision making?
