Time for Action!

OK folks. We have talked and talked about all the problems that are facing our city and the possibilities of corruption. It is time to unite, stand together, and be heard.
We are forming a citizens group which is tentatively being called "Citizens for Democracy". If anyone would like to suggest a different name, we are welcoming suggestions.
Through this group we intend to let the administration know that we are aware of the insufficiencies and the improprieties that are occuring blatently in view of the public sector.
We know this is not the first administration to engage in such behavior, but Garner has gone well beyond mediocrity, and is putting this city in jeopardy for the next 17 years.
There must be an intervention, and we intend to make one.
I am in contact with the State Board of Accounts, and the Deprtment of Local Government Finance (tax Commissioners).
The 2004 audit is currently underway, which is the first year of Garner's administration. It should be very revealing.
There are many other issues we are looking at, and other avenues of objection we have open to us.
For those who wish to participate, continue to e-mail me personally. To those who already have, I thank you all for your committment to set this city straight, and refuse to stand by and watch as mistake after mistake is being made.
If Garner had any character, he would come out and say that he has made mistakes, learned from them, and will try to do better. Instead, all we hear is silence or excuses.
His time for making amends is past.

  • Laura: Thank you, for your work and good ideas. I like the title,
    CITIZENS FOR DEMOCRACY.

I think that the word DEMOCRACY stands for: FAIRNESS
    EQUALITY
    HUMAN KINDNESS
    HONESTY
    NON-POLITICAL
    FOR ALL THE PEOPLE

    Our current City Administration
is not aware of the meaning
    of the word, "DEMOCRACY".

    Thank you for your cooperation.

The tribune, aka the 'Bune, has a chicken editor who can only talk about sports.

  • Messer and Crump being union people have turned their backs on the Sanitation workers.
Will see what happens when this Mayor turns his back on the Police Dept. and the other Unions.
In this Sundays Tribune the 2006 budget will be printed. Including the 2.5 raise's for City Employee's. But Garner is going to allow 26 employees lose their jobs. And all their Insurance Benfits. Shame on you James Garner, Beverly Crump, Jack Messer!

    Who will be next?

    Your Fired:

    James Garner
    Tony Torran

    Shane Gibson
    Jack Messer
    Beverly Crump
    Chief Harl

  • Laura: Can the new group that is being formed do something about the mess we have in New Albany City Government?

Council members Messer and Blevins are city employees controlled by Mayor Garner.

Council member Crump's husband is a police retiree of the city.

How can they ever vote for what is
really best for the city, if the
    Mayor controls them?

  • east ender--What about: "Concerned Citizens for Democracy."

Since this citizens group will represent all of us Little People in New Albany.

This is long over due! Concern taxpayer has been talking citizens group for month's. As well as a Watch Dog Group. Count me in!

    We need action NOW!

Council meeting next thursday. We need to be heard.

  • Sept.3 article in CJ;

Off-duty Police must park patrol cars.

My questions is Chief Merle Harl going to keep driving his car home to Washington County?

So they still get to do their grocery shopping and laundry and what ever errands they choose to use their police cars for? At the cost of the Taxpayers of New Albany?
So since about half live outside the City they are suppose to park their police cars in their drive ways? So who is going to check and see that they do it?
In the past New Albany Police cars have been spotted at "HOOTER'S"...Greentree Mall.. Also going to Louisville!
I guess Garner got wind the Council was getting ready to lower the hammer on them!
I now wonder what it would take to get all these people to turn in their cell phones. That the taxpayers are paying monthly bills on?

    We can only wish!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:29 PM, September 02, 2005

  • How can anyone believe ot trust Chief Harl when he himself breaks the laws!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:30 PM, September 02, 2005

  • Chief Harl is not even a resident of New Albany.
    He can't run for office!
    Beside that he's Garners Boy.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:23 PM, September 02, 2005

  • First of all, the law changed regarding a Police Chief having to live in the County he represents. A pretty stupid thing to me, but I guess it lets the Mayor pick and choose as he pleases.
As for the suggestion of Concered Citizens for Democracy, I really like that. If everyone agrees, we'll go with that. I think it says it all.
As for cleaning up this mess of City government in New Albany, that's exactly what we intend to do. It CAN be done, and we're gonna do it!!!

By Blogger East Ender, at 4:12 PM, September 02, 2005

  • I really like that "Concerned Citizens FOR Democracy" that seems to say it all....

  • Great job Laura. Concern citizens for democracy. Are you going to speak at City Council meeting this coming thursday? I think we need to contact the Council members to have a town meeting. Let's get to the bottom of these problems. We all have alot of questions needed answered.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:57 PM, September 02, 2005

  • Police Chief Harl is not a New Albany resident. He also does not follow the
laws on the books. I am sure the lady he appointed as Code Enforcement Officer is a nice person and probably quialified to do a good job.

Harl did not follow the law on the books for that appointment. He and Garner are probably just laughing their heads off as they think they pulled a fast one on the City Concil.

I hope the Council looks into this and makes them follow the law.

Again-- no criticism of the lady,
just the people she happens to work for. I am sure she can do a good job.

To everyone who is getting involved, we thank you and look forward to worjing with you to bring this city back the pride it once had.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:30 AM, September 03, 2005

  • We no longer want excuses from this Mayor. We want action. Were tired of the lies and poor management of this City. And the power plays done by certain Council Members. Gayhan, Messer, Crump, Blevins, Seabrook.. They have truly turned their backs on the people of New Albany who have elected them to office. Promises made and promises "Not Kept" should be their new slogan. "Valla Ann" needs to step up to the plate and help the people of this City. She can make things happen. We should of listen to her month's ago. Were all fed up with this Adminstration. Doug screwed us-Regina screwed us, and now idiot Garner is trying to screw us. The time is now to stand together for the betterment of the people and for all the people of New Albany.

WILL THE STATE STEP IN AND HELPCLEAN UP NEWALBANY?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:16 AM, September 03, 2005

  • Maybe the Indiana State Police would
step in and investigate Chief Harl for
not following the law when he jumped in and appointed the Code Enforcement Officer.

As was stated in an earlier comment,
these remarks are not directed toward
the lady appointed. I am sure that she will do a good job.

  • Robert Martin family-
Well said. You reflect the sentiments of many citizens of this City.
We will begin our battle soon.
As for the stunt pulled in "assigning" a code enforcement officer...I am curious to know where the allotted $30K salary is going.
Is this how Garner and his staff are giving themselves raises?
Why raises? They certainly haven't earned them. Their work has been way below acceptable.

By Blogger East Ender, at 2:26 AM, September 04, 2005

  • I have heard that Chief Harl is going to try to move the $30,000 alloted for the Ordinance Enforcement Officer over to his budget in Police Dept.

I think that the $30,000. was listed in the 2005 budget under the line of
    City Attorney.

Is City Attorney, Shane Gibson, helping Chief Harl to continue not
    following the law?

WHY DOESN'T THE CITY COUNCIL WAKE UP
    AND STOP THIS LAW BREAKING?

MAYOR JERRY ABRAMSON JUST ANNOUNCED THAT LOUISVILLE IS PREPARED TO ACCEPT 500 EVACUEES FROM THE HURRICANE TODAY.
THEY WILL HELP WITH FOOD, HOUSING AND NEEDS. SOME AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, SOME IN APARTMENTS AND SOME IN HOMES.

ISN'T IT SICKENING THAT OUR DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, ANTHONY B. TORAN, IS
TAKING OFF FOR LOUISIANA TO RESCUE THE ANIMALS? OK---TONY---WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING?

TONY COULD TALK TO BOB LANE OF HOUSING AUTHORITY AND ARRANGE TO HOUSE PEOPLE IN THE APARTMENTS THAT THE HOUSING AUTHORITY HAS EMPTY.

IT DOES'NT TAKE A GENIUS TO FIGURE THIS OUT. THIS IS TYPICAL OF OUR NEW ALBANY ADMINISTRATION TODAY.

  • Tony Brown Toran needs to be out of town saving animals. How about humans and pets! Wonder if he gets paid for being off? Who's paying for his trip? The taxpayers of New Albany. Did he take his personal car or City car that the Taxpayers is paying for? It's grandstanding typical Garner/Toran style....Neither one gives a damn about sanitation employees getting fired. But they will save animals?

  • To The Citizens Of New Albany and
    Concerned Citizens For Democracy:

It is time to face this Adminstration.

And to hold elected officials accountiable.

I am truly sick and tired of this corruption, and greed, lies and mismanagement of my tax dollars.

And our elected officials making decisions that benfit others and not me!

We have a Voice! And we need to demand to be heard!

    (1) I suggest to each and everyone of you if you have a computer you email 5 people who is as sick and tired of these decisions being made on our behalf as taxpayers by Mayor Garner.
To attend this coming thursday's City Council meeting.

    (2) If you really want to make a difference, and have a voice e-mail Laura and join Concern Citizens For Democracy.

    (3) Talk to your neighbors and let them know what is really going on in this city.

    (4) Contact your City Council Member. If you don't know how to reach them Some one on this blog will list phone numbers of City Council Members. We elected them to represent us. The people of New Albany.

    (5) Bring a friend to Council Meeting this thursday.

We need to hold Mayor Garner accountiable for his mismangement of our Tax Dollars.

As well as for his wasteful spending. I don't know about the rest of you but I am sick and tired of paying for all these perks, that they seem to enjoy.

We all agree we will be getting hit with higher sewer bills and other fees. In the month's to come.

In my view I do not feel we can continue to let these problems go unnoticed without speaking out.

And if you love our Little Town like most of us do. And if we sit back and do nothing then "Shame On All Of Us."

I am only ONE VOICE but I truly feel my voice does matters. So if we truly want change we can all do it together.

And we all become a "True Voice" of Concerned Citizens For Democracy.

I am mad as "Hell" and we need to do something NOW!

We as Citizens and Taxpayers of New Albany do have "Rights" and our rights are being violated.

So our choices is this "Either We Stand Up Together" for what we Believe In.

Or we sit back and do nothing?

And don't ever let no one say to you that your voice doesn't matter. Because it does matter!

  • Dana,
I would like to thank you for posting some reasonable thoughts. I have tried my best to keep this blog on the topics and away from the petty nonsense that sometimes finds its way here.
Unfortunately, my policy to allow anonymous commentors, for those who have information but are in a position where they cannot speak under their own names (curse of a small town), has opened the door for others who cannot behave like adults and engage in useful discourse.
I try to police it the best I can, but sometimes things get by me, and sometimes people are just inciting hostility to discredit this blog.
Please hang in there with those of us who truly want what is best for the city, and progress in a well thought out and planned manner.
Your opinions and thoughts are welcomed here, and you can e-mail me personally any time.
