Common Sense: Is there any left in N.A.?

In today's Tribune there is an interesting article concerning the City's present swimming pool investment, the Camille Wright Pool.
We see that the new Ordinance, passed at the last Council session, that allows the Parks Dept. to keep all proceeds from concessions in-house, has quickly been put to use at the under-achieving Camille Wright Pool. The Parks Department will now be providing a full 'concession stand' instead of the familiar Snak-Machines.
Parks Director Bill Koehler expects the new concession offerings at the pool will help to make up the revenue losses this year.
We would be curious to know who has been selected for helping to operate a Concession stand on behalf of the Parks Department.
The article states the pool only lost about $7,000 last year, and that is a major improvement from proceeding years (financials concur). The Pool has historically been a losing enterprise for the City, often recording losses of 5 figures.
Even with Bill Koehler recruiting uses by several area swim teams, the pool is still under-used and losing money. How much can we count on hot dogs and hamburgers to bail out a losing operation?
Still, we believe the Camille Wright Pool is an asset to the community. Only, let's get this one operating in the black before we pledge our property taxes that an entire complex of pools is a good idea.
How can anyone even try to explain to us the reasoning that a $16 million indoor swimming complex will suddenly succeed in New Albany when the Camille Wright pool, and the Holiday Inn pool, are both already underutilized?
Where's the feasibility study that says this project will succeed?
Oh, that's right, they didn't have one done.
Furthermore, with the Parks Department busy over on Budd Road and at Bicknell Park, along with all the other projects we've heard about, don't they have their hands full right now?
The Swimming Pool Natatorium portion of the Scribner Project should, by all known indicators, be postponed for at least 2 years.
Council members must be the reasonable Public Stewards they were elected to be.
Sometimes this means making tough decisions and taking drastic measures to protect the best interest of the majority of the citizens.
Rescinding the EDIT funds from the Scribner Project will solve many more problems and clear the way for much more future economic development.
We must be responsible for having a strong foundation on which future businesses can stake their life dreams and financial well-being on.

Note: we are bringing DICK STEWART'S previous comment questions up to this posting because we think it deserves more consideration and contemplation before disappearing into 'Archives'.

  • There is a very well written opinion article from David Hagman concerning the Daisy Ln. development that was heralded by Tribune Editor John Tucker last week.
The writer summizes, "...at some point you must say enough." Even though the project has been pushed by City officials, Mr. Hagman says: "I among others applaud the seven [Council Memebers] who voted against this project at this point in time."
    Gee, sounds familiar.
Not the right project at the right time. Other things must logically occur first.
    Proper infrastructure to be specific.
Thank you to the CM's who have the courage and the wisdom to know when something is not right despite the insistance of City planners.
We have faith that this courage will prevail over other bad decisions being proposed.

  • Hey.....that's a really good point about nickels and dimes adding up to significant amounts.
It ALL counts, and it ALL matters.
That's why we deserve a full investigation into the 2004 Audit findings, as recommended by the State Board of Accounts, and a particularly close look at the Sewer Fund.
Meanwhile, we must reel in unnecessary costs and do whatever we can to keep expenses down until our financial footing is declared secure.

  • Great article Mr. Stewert! The little people are saving their nickles and dimes "ceese" to support a real mayor in 2007! A new mayor with a real vision for New Albany!

Since Jeff is in your district Dick we think you need to run for Council against him.

    Now that's an idea!

  • Three Cheers for Dick Stewart. He is a faithful face at those long council
meetings. That means that he has taken the time to study and learn the
issues facing the City of New Albany.

Three Cheers for Dick Stewart for City Council. Can we start working on his
campaign now? We need him on that City Council.

  • QUESTION....................

DO YOU THINK THAT MR. TUCKER OF THE
TRIBUNE IS WRITING ALL OF THOSE
DISTURBING ARTICLES ABOUT DAISY LANE TO ENRAGE PEOPLE AND GET THEM TO READ THE TRIBUNE BECAUSE HE HAS LEARNED THAT PEOPLE ARE GETTING THE REAL NEWS OF NEW ALBANY FROM
    "SPEAK OUT LOUD NEW ALBANY"
    AND
    "FREEDOM OF SPEECH"
    ON THE INERNET ?

    GREAT JOB LAURA!

  • I must take issue with the posting on Freedom of Speech today.
The Linden Meadows project being done by the CHDO is a good project for several reasons.
It has saved significant 'period' housing that is part of the history of New Albany and was to be torn down by the Hospital expansion.
Many other BEAUTIFUL homes were torn down and lost forever.
This project provides opportunity for 1st time homebuyers to purchase part of New Albany.
It will generate millions of $$$ in housing re-hab money for the entire City, which is the number 1 complaint of ALL neighborhood Assoc.'s
The Mayor won't get near this project because it's too complicated for him to understand and too politically charged. So, I figure there MUST be something good about it (juz kidding).
Therefore, I've kept informed about the project and its progress or the lack thereof.
Specifically, there are several points that need clarification or correction.
    Here's what I know:
First, don't worry about the houses out on Linden. They have buyers that are being qualified now. Buyers out of over 250 applicants.
Yes, it's true there are that many, I worked that very list myself as a Consultant. So, no. John Miller is not a liar.
Finally, The decision made in the lawsuit, now being appealed, was that in 1962, the last legal private owners of the land (Jensens), recieved their money and signed away their rights to the land.
    My personal opinion:
I was also familiar with that lot of land before the CHDO ever stepped into it. It wasn't a Park.
With all the land being donated for Parks lately, it would be nice if this land were donated to the efforts to 'save' New Albany and its heritage.
This project could help hundreds of families in our community.
Why are there 6 families who don't want to see that happen?

By Blogger East Ender, at 4:51 PM, May 28, 2006

  • That last took courage, Laura. I acknowledge that. Keep looking for the truth in other quarters, too. I think you'll find it in what you would currently call "surprising places."

    By Blogger All4Word, at 11:45 PM, May 28, 2006

  • It was interesting, and somewhat relieving, to read the Tribune's John Tucker continuing thoughts in his written Opinion on Sunday.
By golly, I think he's gotten it!
Welcome to New Albany, where 'putting the cart before the horse' is business as usual.
That's why they never get anywhere and Downtown New Albany is indeed stagnant. There's been a lot of 'carts' abandoned down there.
Abandoned for lack of a driving force that could have started with no-brainers like road improvements and serious efforts at cleanliness.
Things that never happened despite the Consolidated Plan.
I ask you, how can ANY Council
Member sit there with ANY good sense and PROMISE these folks that their roads WILL get the overhauls they need?
How many of these were CM's who promised the $44 million Sewer project would satisfy the EPA requirements? Yet, it didn't & here we are again.
They want us to pay for a re-do because they got it wrong.
There is absolutely NO climate of TRUST, thus, no 'Teamwork' or 'Unity' in our local Political networks that must all function collectively at times to make good economic progress happen.
    Note: GOOD economic progress.
What's that they say about, "once bitten..."?
It's a damn shame, but it's a fact, that nobody is going to put their word out there, particularly on something so dangerous, on the word of promises made from someone they can't trust.
Garner can't be trusted to use money approporiated for certain uses on those actual uses and nothing else.
If things were done because they needed done, because they SHOULD be done, Daisy Ln. would already be prepared to handle such "good development".
    Alas... not in New Albany.
Here, they always wanna put the cart before the horse.

  • In our world where it seems we are taught to judge everything all around and about us and our opinions,it might be wise to ask Laura if you can judge anything. To have an opinion you will need all the facts, information, past, and present.

Since you don't have the legal skills or all the information, you might agree, it may be unwise to judge Freedom Of Speech's article.

How many of your judgements and opinions were you perfectly sure they were correct? Would you want to change opinions now with the benfit of 20/20 hindsight?

Since every opinion is based on your limited information at hand. Facts is what's left after you've run out of personal opinions when Mr. Miller and CHDO was your employer?

Do you really know all the facts?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:57 AM, May 29, 2006

  • So the heirs to the Linden land got paid? And their still suing?

Sounds like they are really talking about something else...

"Not In My Back Yard" maybe?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:06 AM, May 29, 2006

  • Note to anonymous -
It is not wise to assume to know the limits, or breadth, of someone else's knowledge.
That's the kind of CRAP Roger tries to insinuate and it's insulting.
In this instance, you charge me with "judging" a situation without all the facts "at hand".
    O.K. So, please enlighten me.
The one fact I do not know in this equation is the question I ended my comments with. Why, exactly, are the plaintiffs intent on stopping this project?
You must first agree to abide by the facts we all know to be true, and that is that the property is, and has been, owned by the City.
The contention is against the proposed USE of the property.
Do you know YOUR facts about my long history with the CHDO?
I originally became involved with the organization as an unpaid volunteer because I believed in their mission and felt they had a quality program that had a great need in New Albany.
My opinion is based on my research and knowledge of housing conditions in New Albany and surrounding Counties.
    It is still my opinion.
True, I did eventually recieve compensation for Client Consulting for a time, stepping down as Vice-President of the Board to do so.
However CHDO was never my 'employer'. I am an independent contractor.
To the others who want to applaud my position on the Linden Meadows project, I would like to make note of another fact.
Where's all the support from your hero City officials like the ones who show up for the Daisy Lane development?
If there is so much concern for good community development, why is the City so quiet about this?
Let me give you a hint:
Since this is a non-profit venture, and any matching Federal Funds for City-wide rehabs WON'T go into the City's hands, but will stay under the control of the CHDO, there's no direct benefit to motivate support.
Odd that it's the percieved connection to the City that has really caused so much trouble to begin with.
Still, I wouldn't think it would be such a good idea that Current CHDO President, John Gonder is also listed as a Plaintiff on the lawsuit recently filed against the City Council.
It's also been quite interesting to see the 'support' the Linden Meadows project opposition has been recieving.
What could be the connection with a Main Street B&B?
Indeed, ALL the facts can make it quite confusing.

By Blogger East Ender, at 5:06 PM, May 29, 2006

  • Carl Holiday and Steve Goodman have two b and b on Main Street and are partners with Doug England. I'm not sure what you are inferring as to their participation in this matter, but they are in bed with the previous mayor, and I guess, you are right, they must be suspect.
