Was it RUMPKYGATE After All?

We have preliminary information that the Sanitation Company, specially created to take on the New Albany service has been shut down by the EPA due to multiple violations.
We are in the process of verifying this information and will bring you more details as they occur. For now, this is a troublesome rumor, but it comes from reliable, multiple sources.
If our sources are indeed correct it is questionable what will occur in terms of garbage pick-ups this week.
We have questioned the contract again and again, and have attempted to secure a copy of the "final" version since the "rough draft" was published on Randy Smith's blog, Volunteer Hoosier, where it was vehemently defended.
This was a contentious occurrence when the bid was awarded to a then non-existent company, and we have questioned its validity ever since.
There have been many, many issues surrounding the privatization of Sanitation services, including the question of who was partnered in the new company and why they were using City property and equipment without any type of compensation going to the City in return.
Stay tuned for more information, and verification of these events.

Looks like the trucks are running today.

  • Lots of interesting activity is coming up for the Council meeting this Thursday.
Issues are going to be raised that may or may not be on their agenda, but it's on ours.
We have questions we want answered, and actions that must be undertaken to assure the citizens that care is being taken concerning what's best for the City and the community.

  • Today's Tribune reported a problem with the Sanitation Company, and it is concerning the lack of proper permits.
This may be the rumblings we heard that suggested they had been "shut down".
Indeed they have been shut down in one area of service that New Albany rate-payers have long had use of.
Southern Indiana Waste Systems (SIWS) is no longer allowed to collect, or accept any large bulk items at the 5th street location.
IDEM, citing the lack of proper permits for operating a transfer station, ordered the company can no longer accept such items.
After so many years of citizens being able to drop off large items at the City Sanitation site for no charge, we have since been paying a new fee to SIWS for this service, but now folks must take their items to Clarksville or Borden for disposal, at an additional fee.
This is exactly the type of things citizens railed against when our sanitation services were proposed to be privatized.
We cited concerns of not recieving the same quality of service and the possibilities of higher fees.
Despite assurances from the Mayor that service would not be compromised, we see now that is exactly what has happened here.
The article accurately states that under City provided Sanitation, this service was available for free at the 5th St. location.

  • We took a load of stuff there last week and were charged $10 to dispose of it. It was a bit of a surprise.

  • Great to hear the updates on the Sewer Board meeting, and many thanks go out to those who are able to sity thru those things. We know it can't be fun.
Still, we need to get the info out to the people so they know what's going on.
It was an interesting read last week in the paper about Mr. Ruckman (the "Ruckman line") and the sewer credits he expects to receive under this new agreement.
Sure would be interesting to follow the money on that one.
Lost $2 mil from Georgetown, but who gets what for Ruckman?
Is the proposed rate increase supposed to make up the dif?
    INFURIATING!!!
