Tribune Angers Many (again)
Sunday's "opinion" piece by Tribune Publisher, John Tucker, was without a doubt the most asinine thing I have ever read from a newspaper publisher.
In fact, the "article" (I use the term very loosely) was so absurd that it's difficult to swallow the fact that it was actually printed in something that insists on calling itself a NEWSpaper!
We are not providing a link from here due to the outrage that has been expressed by so many people over this poor, poor choice of publishing. If you haven't read it, consider yourself fortunate. It was a ridiculous piece of satire storytelling so very familiar to anyone who has ever read one of Rogers' rants over at the New Albany Confidential blog .
Mr. Tucker has certainly made no bones about the fact that he has aligned himself with the politically motivated "progressives" in our community. A certain faction of folks who are convinced that their opinions are the only ones in New Albany that actually matter, and who apparently have made it their mission in life to insult, slander, and otherwise bad-mouth CM's Coffey, Price, and Schmidt by any means, and with every opportunity that presents itself.
Thus, not only does everything the Tribune reports from the third floor these days have the progressive spin on it, but the other contents of the paper (I will NOT call it a NEWS-paper) are more and more often displaying the same audacious and insolent attitudes of the progressives.
We feel very strongly that Sunday's article by John Tucker not only was an unnecessary and mean-spirited attack on select Council Members, but it was also so entirely off the mark in terms of the issues facing the citizens and rate-payers of New Albany, that it had absolutely no worth being put in print.
We think it is imperative to express our continued profound disappointment in the Tribune and its publisher, John Tucker.
We feel an apology is owed to CM's Dan Coffey and Steve Price, as well as to the Tribune's remaining readership who were subjected to such a ridiculous piece of storytelling that was passed off as journalism.

its called an editorial not an article and good satire at that. Unfortunately what is sad is the satire in this case is true, what is more sad is thet coffey price and schmidt continue to be on the city council
By Anonymous, at 7:17 AM, August 14, 2006
What is so sad is you forget Coffey, Price and Schmidt WERE ELECTED by their constituents.
Too bad, soooo sad.....
The cartoon said it all. At least someone GETS IT at the Tribune.
If Mr. Tucker was/is such an "investigative" journalist -- why isn't he on top of this crminal investigation going down in this fair City? Where is "his" investigative powers? All that talk about his past investigative journalism, what did it just fall in your lap? Over $80 Million squandered, and he still finds it "satirish"?
This is one article where someone will eat those words. Sorry. We didn't do it, we are simply trying to live with the mess.
Have a good one, EastEnder.
By Anonymous, at 8:57 AM, August 14, 2006
Ceece, you are right, it is Tuckers opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.
Why is it when anyone dares to challenge/question the Mayor of Garner Kingdom actions or lack of, they are wrong. What makes you think you are right? Perhaps Tucker takes things at face value and Hershberg digs for the truth. If you believe everything you read from Tucker and hear from Garner I have a nice bridge to sell you.

WHAT A LOW DOWN DIRTY ARTICLE. THERE
MUST BE SOME LEVEL OF STANDARDS IN THE NEWSPAPER BUSINESS.
WAKE UP FOLKS--- THE TRIBUNE TACTICS ARE BEING USED TO SELL NEWSPAPERS FOR THEIR DECLINING CIRCULATION. THEY PLAN ON YOU RUSHING OUT TO BUY A TRIBUNE.
SO SAD-- WE USED TO HAVE A NEWSPAPER THAT REALLY WAS A NEW ALBANY PAPER.
WE HAVE PAID A YEAR'S SUBSCRIPTION,
BUT, DON'T LOOK FOR OUR MONEY NEXT
YEAR.
I DOUBT THAT THE TRIBUNE WOULD BE
WILLING TO REFUND OUR MONEY FOR THE
BALANCE OF THE YEAR.
By Anonymous, at 10:50 AM, August 14, 2006
Maybe because they are the "opinions" of a few, not the majority. As said earlier by someone else, they will eat those words they printed. Let it play out...no one wishes anyone ill will; except for a certain few it seems. Most of us just want to know "WHERE IS THE MONEY"?
The calls these certain Council people have received in support speaks volumes; our opinions are what counts -- not the Tribune's!
Please remember all of this election time -- even though it's a good year off before we even start.
Answer me this. Why didn't the Tribune jump all over the "sewer utility being in technical default"? Why didn't the Tribune jump all over the meeting held in Indy about the SRF monies? Why haven't we heard the news about the meeting? It simply doesn't make sense; and if it doesn't make sense, it isn't right.
My logic defies the Tribune's reasoning. Where is the investigative journalism presented with such hooplah when this new fellow came to town?
Yeah. Right. Okay. Whatever you say. We'll keep our opinions on the "front" burner; let the Tribune bury their heads in the sand if they so choose and report same.
Unbelieveable. More of the same, distract and detract from what has happened in our City and the monies that are missing in action.
We will beg to disagree with the Tribune's "opinion". We have our own, and are allowed same.

Mr. Price did sent a rebuttal letter to the Tribune. The letter is posted on Freedom of Speech if anyone wants to check it out.
In my opinion Mr. Price did a fine job of answering Mr. Tucker's "satire".
I realize Mr. Tucker is entitled to his opinion but I don't think he should be so obvious is his dislike for Mr. Price. After all he is a newspaper publisher so I believe he should have a little more decorum. But then again, that's just my opinion.

To John Tucker
rape-

2. The act of seizing and carrying off by force; abduction.
3. **** Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice. ****
raped, raping, rapes-
1. To force (another person) to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse; commit rape on.
2. To seize and carry off by force.
3. **** To plunder or pillage. ****
From Dictionary.Com
Do you know how to read and use a dictionary or the internet? I hope that the publisher of our newspaper would make sure he knows what a word means before writing something about it. Do you care if the younger people and kids who read your paper learn what words really mean? I used your article to show my daughter not to believe everything she reads in the paper and to make sure what something means before criticizing other people. You are old enough and probably educated enough to know the difference so you were just twisting the truth to suit your needs..
By Anonymous, at 2:01 PM, August 14, 2006
I am sure Mr. Tucker knows all of the definitions for the word "rape" he just chose to use only one definition in his so called editorial.
I agree with the anonymous poster from 2:01PM. Impressionable children need to know that not everything printed in a newspaper is the truth.
By Anonymous, at 2:08 PM, August 14, 2006
You can throw up dictionary definitions until the cows come home, but it doesn't change the inflammatory (read: violent) way that CM Price intended the original comment to be taken, or the slipshod advance choreography that prefaced the remark.
Sorry, Blogspastic; CM Price's bluff was called, and he looks even more foolish as a result. It may be that all he wanted to do was make good theater for the Bicknell video news service, and the ploy's tastelessness might be forgotten ... except that he's a councilman, and it is fitting and proper for us to draw conclusions when such a transparently staged farce explodes in his face.
I'll be posting more on this topic tonight at NA Confidential.
By The New Albanian, at 2:35 PM, August 14, 2006
let's face it New Albanian you and your group just want to hang Steve Price out to dry.
I have news for you sir, the people of New Albany understand what he was trying to say and are not upset with him but many are upset with Tucker.
By Anonymous, at 2:59 PM, August 14, 2006
I wonder if Roger or Randy or even the mayor had used the word "rape" how would you all react?
I bet you would be livid.
By Anonymous, at 3:37 PM, August 14, 2006
I support Councilman Price and I also appreciate the comments made by Freedom Of Speech. And I do appreciate finally hearing some truth. Who ever you are
Thank You
By Anonymous, at 5:00 PM, August 14, 2006
I am outrage at the attacks on Mr. Price. I like what he says and how he says it. If the mayor thinks he can get a reaction out of us citizens to distract us he will.
Mr. Tucker shame on you.
By Anonymous, at 5:03 PM, August 14, 2006
Mr. Baylor have you never heard the statment: Raping the land? Now Mr. Baylor how does this mean having sex with the land!
For someone who was raised in Georgetown you ought to know all about the land.
Just because you have a problem with middle class hard working citizens you must have serious mental problems as well.
By Anonymous, at 5:08 PM, August 14, 2006
I have an opinion and by god I support Councilman Steve. He has got my vote.
By Anonymous, at 5:09 PM, August 14, 2006
Blogtastic you make my day when you write from the heart. You need to consider running for office.
That's what's wrong with New Albany. We end up with these so called educated fools who know absolutely nothing about finances.
Give me a women anyday who has brains and guts and turn her loose on this City.
Steve Price is one good guy. Steve would give you his shirt off his back. Hell of a good guy.
By Anonymous, at 5:14 PM, August 14, 2006
If more people would be sitting at these council meetings. They might just get a real eye opener to what is really going on in this town.
Hell no we won't pay it's time for James to go.

come on with your bad self mouthpiece for price where's the beef?
By Anonymous, at 11:08 PM, August 14, 2006
I have very serious doubts that this "opinion" piece was even written by John Tucker.
It wreaks of Baylor's "storytelling" that we have read too many times.
Either/Or, it was a really bad decision to print the thing.
What was the point, other than to make a mockery out of Council Members? Why?
What was the deeper message that supported the "storyline", other than bashing the Council Members who ask too many questions? Why?
The real problem lies with the ones who aren't asking ANY questions.
As for the "Rape" comment, it was a perfectly appropriate use of the word! WE ARE BEING RAPED!!!
Who truly used the most inflamatory words that night? ROGER BAYLOR!
MORON: feebleminded; mentally deficient; idiot; imbecile;
What an outright insult!
Shouted out-of-order, directly to a public official at a public meeting, with malice.
Shame on President Gahan for not having Baylor promptly removed.
It is exactly these types of juvenile displays that now routinely take place at Council Meetings, without appropriate control being maintained over the conducting of City business, that have kept me away from the meetings as of late.
Along with the frustrating refusal of requests to follow the proper order of Council business by having City Official speak before the public, the disrespect to citizens over their "allotment" of time and subject matter, and having to watch the "sideshows" of PP's running around the room and hallways helping to strike deals for votes, is all just WAY too outrageous to endure.
After all, we're only interested in any actual business that might have managed to take place.
The other antics can be left to those who have some "storytelling" to do.
By East Ender, at 4:38 AM, August 15, 2006
I, like many others I am sure, am tired of the many commentators on this blog "raping" the Mayor and his administration.
By Anonymous, at 9:53 AM, August 15, 2006
Some day you might atually attend a meeting to see it for yourself, EE.
By Anonymous, at 10:16 AM, August 15, 2006
Anon 9:53AM
Are you saying that the commentors on this blog are sexually assaulting the mayor and his administration?
By Anonymous, at 12:32 PM, August 15, 2006
Not any more than those who think that Price's comments are acceptable. If Price's comments are read by you as sexually assaulting the people of NA, then yes. If you are not offended by Price's comments, then no. It is your perception. Pick your battle, it is a two-way street, Anon at 12:32.
By Anonymous, at 5:13 PM, August 15, 2006
Or "reeks."
Really, you've topped yourself with this one:
I have very serious doubts that this "opinion" piece was even written by John Tucker.
It wreaks of Baylor's "storytelling" that we have read too many times.
Sorry to disappoint, but I'm no ghostwriter.
By The New Albanian, at 7:09 PM, August 15, 2006
We ARE getting taken advantage of and if $84 million dollars isn't enough for a person to be "violent" in their description of what they are doing to us, I don't know what is.
By Anonymous, at 8:23 PM, August 15, 2006
Mr. Baylor I work in the City County Building and you have no idea what goes on there.
This Adminstration is "raping the taxpayers."
By Anonymous, at 8:27 PM, August 15, 2006
I,too was disappointed in the Tribune. Steve did nothing wrong about saying the word "rape".....it is used quite frequently in such things as "the environment is being raped," Good old Roger and Randy wanted to blow it out of proportion....like they are protecting all of us women from misuse of the word!! Well, it wasn't misused. That is their liberal mentality.
The bottom line, is that we do not trust the Mayor's office and we have all the reason NOT to trust them nor Roger and Randy. My gosh, how many times have we been lied to???
A strong Supporter of Freedom of Speech & Steve Price.

I enjoy Councilman Price playing music at the VFW.
cOOL Guy
By Anonymous, at 11:26 PM, August 15, 2006
Oh, great point, Lo.
Remember, Price used "rape" and "people" in the same sentence. Look at the definitions posted above by one of your buddies. There is only one way to interpret his comments, and it is with the first definition.
Go ahead, act like you are not offended, while defendning Freedom of Speech. Believe it or not, I agree that he had the right to say it, but saying it in the context that in did, in the forum that he used showed that this city council is nothing but backwater people. Any business wanting to move to NA (a/k/a/Backwater) need only do their due diligence and will discover that NA is not the place to be. Not as long as this council is sitting, at least.
We have ignorant people saying ignorant things and ruining this town.
By Anonymous, at 5:37 AM, August 16, 2006
Oh Plueeeeeze do you think Mr. Price's comment is going to keep businesses from moving to NA?
Tax incentives are what business owners look for idiot. And the way they hand them out in this town I can't believe we aren't overrun with new business
By Anonymous, at 8:08 AM, August 16, 2006
"And the way they hand them out in this town I can't believe we aren't overrun with new business."
Then why aren't we overrun with new business, idiot? It's obviously not tax incentives.

I have seen news crews from local TV stations laughing as they left the building.
